July 30, 2007 Senate Democrats committed
to keeping the public safe
OLYMPIA – Senate Majority Leader Lisa Brown,
D-Spokane, today issued the following statement
regarding House Republicans’ call for a special legislative
session to address public safety laws:
“Washington has been and will continue to be a national
leader in enacting laws that provide maximum public safety
regarding sex offenders. Senate Democrats are already in
conversations with law enforcement, prosecutors, victims and
their families to review the facts of the Terapon Adhahn
case as well as our current laws dealing with sex offenders.
And we remain committed to sparing no expense to keep the
public as safe as possible.
“To ensure safety, we must take a rational and
considerate approach. And it is our intent to continue
working in a bipartisan fashion on laws that will protect
the public.
“The Senate will conduct hearings during assembly days in
September and use the information we receive from law
enforcement, prosecutors, victims and their families to
craft a reasoned package of legislation.
“It is not in the best interest of the public to rush to
solutions that sound appealing but may have unintended
consequences.
“We still see public safety as government’s number one
priority and will continue to spare no expense to provide
the safest environment possible for the citizens of
Washington.”
