March 30, 2007 Eide says construction
budget good for Federal Way
OLYMPIA – The construction budget launched
Wednesday by the state Senate includes four projects
requested by her constituents, reports Sen. Tracey J.
Eide, D-Federal Way.
“The capital budget does some wonderful things for
Federal Way,” Eide said. “We would protect a magnificent
asset for future generations and upgrade a recreation field
for our children and their children.”
The city of Federal Way request of $2.1 million to
purchase Camp Kilworth, a former Boy Scout camp, was funded.
The property, on 25 acres of waterfront, would be maintained
for public access and habitat preservation. A lodge now on
the site would serve as a community resource. State money
would be combined with funds from the city of Federal Way, a
King County Conservative Futures grant and the Washington
Wildlife and Recreation Program.
“One of the best features of this project is that it
would involve a partnership among residents and various
non-profit groups, including the Rainier Audubon Society and
the Boy Scouts, to tap into environmental expertise and
volunteers,” Eide said. ‘This is such a great investment for
the families of Federal Way.”
The Federal Way National Little League request of $50,000
to make improvements to its stadium also was funded. The
money would be used to rebuild a clubhouse and improve the
lighting system. The association intends that the
improvements will help the stadium to become
self-sufficient. Proceeds would then be used to create a
scholarship for needy athletes.
“As a mother, I fully recognize the need for positive
recreational activities,” Eide said. “This group has a
20-year record of serving kids, and I am pleased to help
them reach this wonderful goal to bring opportunity to
children who otherwise couldn’t afford to participate.”
Also included in the proposed capital budget are $300,000
to replace the boardwalk at West Hylebos Park and $300,000
to renovate the soccer field at Saghalie Park.
The capital budget was considered in the Ways & Means
Committee yesterday, with passage by the full Senate likely
over the weekend. As the House of Representatives and Senate
each released a version, it is customary for a conference
committee to recommend a compromise that is then voted on by
the Legislature.
The session is scheduled to adjourn April 22.
