Eide accepts appointments to two
education-related boards
OLYMPIA – A longtime champion of public education,
Sen. Tracey J. Eide, D-Federal Way, has been
appointed to the board of directors of two local
organizations serving youth. She will join the newly
organized advisory board of the Federal Way Education &
Communities in Schools Foundation. That group creates and
supports programs that increase opportunities for children,
youth and adults in the community. And she will serve on the
board of directors of “Red Star hs,” which operates a
youth-oriented online magazine, written for and by teens.
The site,
http://www.redstarhs.com, offers payment for accepted
articles, and features high schools in the Federal Way and
surrounding areas. “Red Star hs” is working toward offering
a safe, adult-free social networking section on its site.
“For this mom who started her public service career by
volunteering in her children’s classrooms, being asked to
serve in these positions is so rewarding,” Eide said. “I’ve
never wavered from my belief that the smartest investments
we can make — money and time — are in our children.”
“I chose Senator Eide to be on the board of directors for
‘Red Star hs’ because she has been a huge supporter of the
concept of keeping kids safe while online,” said “Red Star
hs” owner Kelly Maloney. “She understands the mission and
goals of ‘Red Star hs’ and backs this up with action.”
Re-elected to her third term in the Senate, Eide is a
member of the Early Learning & K-12 Education Committee and
serves as the floor leader. She has been a strong advocate
for creating educational opportunities for all students and
for designing innovative programs that serve traditional and
nontraditional learners. Eide was a major supporter of the
Learning Commons, an Internet-based academy that has
attracted an ardent and growing number of students across
the state.
The 2007 legislative session convened Jan. 8 and is
scheduled to adjourn April 22.
