July 25, 2007 Seattle Storm hail
Franklin as ‘woman of inspiration’
OLYMPIA – It’s been years since she made a layup
and her hook shot was never that menacing. Yet the Seattle
Storm named Sen. Rosa Franklin, D-Tacoma, as one of
six “Women of Inspiration” in its second annual listing of
the distinction.
The honorees are women “who are leaders in their
respective fields and pioneers for women in their position,”
according to an announcement of the awards. “All six women
share Storm characteristics of being inspirational,
ambitious and passionate, and are helping to create positive
change within their communities.”
“I am deeply touched to be in such company as these
accomplished women,” Franklin said.
“To be recognized by an organization with such
outstanding athletes and role models as the Storm is truly
an honor.”
Joining Franklin are honorees Patricia Baker, with the
Pacific Northwest Ballet; Bonnie Dunbar, retired astronaut;
Doris Heritage, former Olympic competitor; Sally Jewell, of
REI; and Courtney Thompson, member of the NCAA champion
University of Washington women’s volleyball team.
Franklin, a retired nurse, is a member of the Washington
State Nurses Association Hall of Fame. She has served the
29th Legislative District since 1991, when she was elected
to the Washington State House of Representatives. She served
a single term there before winning election to the Senate.
Franklin received her education at Good Samaritan Waverly
Hospital School of Nursing, Columbia, S.C.; University of
Puget Sound (B.A.); and Pacific Lutheran University (M.A.).
She was awarded an honorary doctorate in public service by
the University of Puget Sound last year.
The recipient of numerous professional and community
awards, Franklin serves as vice chair of the Senate Health &
Long-Term Care Committee, where she has championed
affordable and accessible health care.
Recipients will be honored at a special halftime ceremony
during the Storm’s game on July 27, when the team plays the
Indiana Fever.
