March 12, 2007 Now is the time for all
good vets to come to the aid of their state
OLYMPIA – They’ve risked their lives in service to
their country, now they’re ready and willing to serve their
state.
The Senate today approved legislation to establish an
internship program for returning wounded combat veterans
within the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT).
“Many veterans returning home from Iraq are amputees or
were severely injured in combat,” said Sen. Steve Hobbs,
D-Lake Stevens. “Although their bodies may be wounded,
their minds are still sharp and they are ready to put their
military training to good use here in Washington.”
Senate Bill 5242, sponsored by Hobbs, establishes a
WSDOT internship program emphasizing engineering,
construction trades, logistics and project planning.
“These are skills that they already have,” Hobbs said.
“This bill is good for veterans and good for Washington.”
The Senate unanimously approved SB 5242; it now goes to
the House of Representatives for further consideration.
