Sen. Keiser honored for progressive
leadership by national organization
OLYMPIA – Sen. Karen Keiser, D-Kent, has
been honored with the prestigious Arthur S. Flemming
Leadership Award sponsored by the Center for Policy
Alternatives, a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization working
to help state legislators achieve progressive change. She
will receive the award December 8 at the organization’s 2007
Summit on the States in Washington, DC. Other honorees for
2007 include The Honorable Barney Frank (Massachusetts 4th
Congressional District) and NAACP Chairman Julian Bond –

“The failure of the Bush Administration to address
fundamental issues of family leave and health care has
spurred states to take action into their own hands.,” Keiser
said. “I’m pleased that our efforts to bring about positive
change in Washington are being recognized on a national
level.”
The Arthur S. Flemming Award is presented to a leader who
exemplifies the ideals of public service in the public
interest. Former recipients include San Francisco Mayor
Willie L. Brown, Jr., and Vice President Al Gore.
The Center for Policy Alternatives, based in Washington,
D.C., holds the annual Summit of the States, to highlight
state policymakers who spur the growth of progressive
policies across the country. Approximately 400 progressive
state legislators and leaders from across the country,
including legislators with key leadership roles within their
political parties and legislative chambers, will be in
attendance.
