Seattle lawmakers urge tunnel option
remain on the table
OLYMPIA – A number of Seattle-area legislators
continue to express their preference for a tunnel to replace
the aging Alaska Way Viaduct. Their backup would be a
surface/transit option. Democratic Sens. Jeanne
Kohl-Welles, Ken Jacobsen, Adam Kline, Ed Murray and Brian
Weinstein issued this joint statement:
“We appreciate the tremendous amount of work and
resources that the governor and the City of Seattle have
directed to determining which option is most viable for
replacement of the Viaduct. While we understand the
impetus to move forward as soon as possible with a
solution because of public safety concerns, we continue
to oppose selection of a new and larger elevated
structure and believe that the tunnel option better
serves the transportation and economic needs of the city
and the region. We are reluctant to rush into a decision
given the changes that have occurred in the past few
months. We recommend and want to be part of efforts to
reach a viable solution following the March 13 advisory
vote.”
