Rockefeller’s goals for higher
requirements for safety in schools is necessary
OLYMPIA – Schools must remain one of the most
secure places for our children and the Legislature is taking
a step to ensure their protection. Sen. Phil Rockefeller,
D-Kitsap County, is proposing legislation to improve
school security.
Rockefeller’s bill would boost school safety by requiring
at least one safety drill each month while schools are in
session. It would also require schools to conduct an
inventory of all hazardous materials and identify all staff
members who are trained on the national incident management
system.
“The unfortunate tragedy at Foss High School underscores
the need for school safety preparedness. We need to
encourage prevention as well as readiness to respond. This
bill was designed to do both,” Rockefeller said.
Rockefeller has spent months developing this legislation
in consultation with several groups, including the
Association of Washington School Principals and the
Office of the Superintendent
of Public Instruction.
Joe L. Pope, chair of the Washington State School Safety
Advisory Committee, supports Rockefeller’s efforts. “His
bill will help us develop comprehensive safety plans to
minimize confusion during lockdowns.”
State Superintendent Terry Bergeson applauds his efforts
by stating, “ I appreciate his leadership on this issue, and
we look forward to working with him to craft legislation and
offer appropriate support that will accomplish our goals.”
Rockefeller’s bill would encourage school districts to
apply for federal emergency response and crisis management
grants.
The Legislature convenes on Jan. 8 for what is expected
to be a 105 day session.
