Kitsap County receives salmon grant
recovery funding
OLYMPIA — Sen. Phil Rockefeller, D-Kitsap
County, announced today that Kitsap County has received
a total of $1,055,641 from the Washington State Salmon
Recovery Funding Board to protect and restore salmon
populations and their habitats.
The funds will be allocated as follows:
- $460,000 for protecting Pilot Point
- $354,026 for mid Puget Sound fisheries enhancement
group, Barker Creek Estuary Culvert replacement
- $125,000 for surveying Chico Creek Estuary
- $101,315 to the Suquamish Tribe for assessing fish
use of the west sound near shore
- $15,300 for completion of the pre-purchase tasks for
Chico Estuary
As prime sponsor of Senate Bill 5372 which created the
Puget Sound Partnership, an agency dedicated to protecting
Puget Sound, Rockefeller said that these funds will
compliment the recovery of vital habitat in Puget Sound, to
the benefit of both people and salmon.
"I'm delighted with the award of this grant money," said
Sen. Rockefeller. "It will go towards work such as planting
trees along streams to cool the water for salmon, replacing
culverts that prevent salmon from migrating to spawning
habitat, and restoring entire floodplains. I'm especially
pleased that the Barker Creek Estuary is getting a much
needed boost."
