Tom
honored for his efforts to make school lunches affordable
for all
OLYMPIA –
Millions of American children depend on reduced price school
meals, but some families struggle to cover the co-pay. To
help ensure more children have access to nutritious,
affordable meals while at school, Sen. Rodney Tom,
D-Medina, worked this session to eliminate the
burdensome co-pay for some Washington families.
The
Washington School Nutrition Association (WSNA) recognized
Tom and four other legislators for their efforts during a
conference earlier this month. The 2007-09 state operating
budget includes $3.2 million to eliminate the 40-cent co-pay
for K-3 students eligible for reduced price lunch. WSNA
expects the co-pay elimination will boost participation in
the lunch program among eligible families.
“If
even one Washington student goes through the school day
distracted by hunger, that’s one too many,” Tom said. “We
know that good nutrition is closely tied with academic
performance. All children deserve a healthful,
balanced diet, regardless of their family income.”
The
Legislature in 2006 eliminated the reduced price breakfast
co-pay for K-12 students.
WSNA
is a statewide association of school and child care food
service professionals, and industry representatives.
