March 19, 2008 Senator Darlene Fairley
recognized as a strong supporter of open government
OLYMPIA
— Sen. Darlene Fairley, D-Lake Forest Park, chair of
the Government Operations & Elections Committee, has been
recognized as being one of the top sponsors of bills in
support of open government.
Every year the Evergreen Freedom Foundation, EFF, puts on
“Sunshine Week” (March 16–22) which focuses on the
importance of open government. The EFF creates a report card
for Washington state legislators and grades them on their
support of open government.
“I believe part of my responsibility here is to advance
individual liberty and promote accountability within
government,” said Fairley.
The bills that Sen. Fairley won her points for supporting
were:
- Senate Bill 5420: Requiring public agencies, special
purpose districts, and municipalities to post
information on public agencies websites
- Senate Bill 5603: Updating public records provisions
- Senate Bill 5672: Requiring special purpose
districts and municipalities to post information on
public agencies web sites
- Senate Bill 6704: Modifying the notice requirement
for special meetings
- Senate Bill 6776: Modifying state whistle blower
protection (passed)
This year, grading was on the sponsorships of 36 House
bills and 19 Senate bills that directly affected open
government laws and policies.
