Feb. 20, 2008 Nine Lady Braves meet two
lady senators
OLYMPIA — The La Conner High School Girls'
Volleyball Team has gotten a lot of attention since winning
the State 2B Championship and today was no exception during
their trip to Olympia to receive recognition from the
Legislature.
Among their greatest admirers was Sen. Mary Margaret
Haugen, D-Camano Island, who took a point of personal
privilege to sing their praises to her colleagues.
“This is the second year in a row that La Conner High
School — which has just 200 students — has managed to field
a state championship team,” bragged Haugen from the floor of
the Senate, as head coach Suzanne Marble and the nine young
women of the team stood to be recognized in the visitors’
gallery.
While visiting the Senate chamber, the Lady Braves went
downstairs and had a surprise encounter with another senator
from “the other Washington” —
U.S. Senator Patty Murray,
who represents Washington in Congress, but was visiting the
Legislature for the day.
The Lady Braves had lunch with all three of the
Legislators from their area, and toured the Legislature and
Washington Supreme Court during their day in Olympia, and
made quite an impression on everyone they met.
“I know how proud the town of La Conner was when the Lady
Braves returned to town as state champions,” said Haugen. “I
hope everyone is equally proud of the fine way they
represented their school while they were visiting our
capitol — these are some very impressive young women.”
