Group reducing juvenile crime, drop out
rate taps McAuliffe for steering committee
OLYMPIA
– A King County program aimed at reducing juvenile crime and
the resulting incarceration with targeted intervention
programs has selected Sen. Rosemary McAuliffe, D-Bothell,
to serve on the group’s steering committee.
The Reinvesting in Youth program is a partnership of
community representatives and city and county government
representatives in King County. The Puget Sound Educational
Service District is the lead agency.
“A big part of this program is reducing dropout rates in
our schools, we know that many kids who don’t finish school
face higher risk factors for incarceration, so getting in
front of this with intervention programs is an effective way
of saving money in our criminal justice system and using it
for programs that help kids” McAuliffe said.
Reinvesting in Youth launched the program in 2007 with
research that supports best practices and is committed to
bringing the new strategies to schools in King County.
McAuliffe is chair of the Senate Early Learning & K-12
Education Committee.
