McDermott takes the oath of office at
the 2008 session opening day ceremony
OLYMPIA — Sen. Joe McDermott (D-Seattle)
was sworn in today at the opening day ceremony for the 2008
short session.
In October, McDermott was appointed by the Metropolitan
King County Council to the State Senate to replace Erik
Poulsen who resigned earlier that month.
He represents the 34th District which is comprised of
West Seattle, White Center, Burien, Vashon and Maury
Islands.
McDermott began serving in the House of Representatives
in January of 2001. During his four terms with the House,
his legislative priorities included: education, elections
and public disclosures, the environment and civil rights
issues.
“I bring my passions and interests for students and the
unique needs of the 34th District with me as my first
session in the Senate begins,” said McDermott.
Currently McDermott serves on the following Senate
Committees:
- Early Learning & K-12 Education
- Government Operations & Elections
- Judiciary
Involvement in these committees allows him to focus on
his priorities this session which are eliminating the co pay
for school lunches in grades 4-12, expanding domestic
partnership rights and protecting the Puget Sound and Maury
Island.
