March 6, 2008 Protecting Washington’s
children from toxins
OLYMPIA – Today, the Federal government conceded
that a vaccine caused a 9-year-old girl’s autism symptoms.
The ruling plus endless scientific studies lead Sen. Eric
Oemig, D-Kirkland, to sponsor an amendment that adds
child vaccines to a bill that establishes toxic limits for
children’s products. The amendment would require parents be
told if their child’s flu shot contains mercury and if a
mercury-free shot are available.
“Today’s ruling only strengthens the case that parents
need to know what is injected into their children,” said
Oemig. “This is simply informed consent. Tell mom before you
inject poison into her kid. It does not prohibit
mercury-added vaccines. It just gives parents a choice of
how much poison to expose their kids to.”
House Bill 2647 limits lead, cadmium and phthalates
from children’s products sold in Washington. It will limit
lead and cadmium to 40 parts per-million in products. The
average flu vaccination has 50 parts-per-million of a
significantly more toxic mercury-based pesticide.
“Mercury is far more toxic than lead. Kids deserve to be
protected and parents have the right to an informed choice
for their children.” Oemig said.
