March 13, 2008 Statement from Sen.
Weinstein on the Homeowners’ Bill of Rights
OLYMPIA
– Sen. Brian Weinstein, D-Mercer Island, made the
following statement about the House’s failure to vote on the
Homeowners’ Bill of Rights before the end of the 2008
Legislative Session.
With only a couple hours left in the 2008 Legislative
session, I am disappointed that for the second year in a row
the Homeowners’ Bill of Rights is dead.
After the bill passed the Senate, the House Judiciary
Committee and many conversations with the Speaker all
session, I offered an extremely reasonable compromise
yesterday. I offered to support his three-point plan if he
would agree to the simplest of consumer rights – allowing an
aggrieved homebuyer to take the builder to court for
violating the building code only after the homebuyer gave
the builder notice and an opportunity to fix the problem.
I have not heard from him since offering this compromise
and can only assume with only hours left in the session, he
has decided to let the bill die.
Unfortunately, the Speaker has decided to stand with
powerful special interests rather than the homebuyers of
Washington.
