Asian Counseling and Referral Service

$3 million to establish the new ACRS center in the Rainier Valley which will help that economically distressed area because this project will create 225 jobs. 100 of those jobs will be construction jobs and 125 will be service positions. It is estimated the staff will also bring $1.2 million in purchasing power to the Valley.

 

The Northwest African American Museum

$650,000 for renovations. The NAAM is slated to open its doors in the winter of 2008. The museum is housed in the Urban League Village at Colman School, a historic landmark that crowns Seattle’s I-90 lid park. The museums mission: “The Northwest African American Museum will be a vibrant community gathering place, a place where youth, adults and families can honor the past and articulate the future. The Museum will document and exhibit the unique historical and cultural experiences of African Americans in Seattle and the Pacific Northwest. The Museum will be a generative institution whose momentum will capture history and culture as it occurs, synthesizing what it means for today and tomorrow.”

 

Wing Luke Asian Museum

$2 million towards the rehabilitation of the historic East Kong Yick Building as the museum’s new home. Wing Luke engages the Asian Pacific American communities and the public in exploring issues related to the culture, art and history of Asian Pacific Americans. A Smithsonian Institution affiliate, the Wing Luke Asian Museum is the premier pan-Asian Pacific American museum in the country. From its new home, the Museum will expand its role as an economic and community resource for a distinctly diverse neighborhood, as one of Seattle's historic and creative treasures, and as a cultural institution of national significance.

 

El Centro de la Raza

$821,000 for roof replacement with seismic upgrade. El Centro de la Raza is housed in a 1911 building that formerly served as a school. Since purchasing the building in 1998 from the Seattle School District, El Centro has used private and public funds to renovate this aging structure so that El Centro can to provide an important range of community services to the area’s diverse population. El Centro has already completed the first phase of this rehabilitation, which included replacement of their boiler. The second phase, the replacement of the original windows, is being completed at the present. El Centro is seeking additional funding from other sources to complete the building renovation, including electricity, plumbing and other structural concerns.

 

Filipino Community Center

$145,000 to continue renovations of the Filipino Community Center’s Filstar Youth Programs Center, which houses youth empowerment programs.

 

 

The Duwamish Longhouse and Cultural Center

$2 million for construction of the center’s new home located in the heart of an economic growth zone in Seattle. The Center is committed to developing and expanding the skills of a growing workforce, and is a collaboration between business, labor, industry and education. The new space will provide much needed space and enhanced training opportunities for individuals seeking family wage careers in the community. Nearly 400 apprentices and 1500 journey level tradesmen benefit each year from their training and skills enhancement programs. The Trust does outreach to diverse populations and provides opportunities to all people regardless of socio-economic condition, age or gender. More than one-third of the enrollees are from minority groups or immigrant populations.

 

 

Nisei Veterans Committee

$250,000 to remodel and expand the Nisei Veterans Committee Memorial Hall to honor Japanese-American soldiers who served in World War II and other wars and conflicts. The Hall will display memorabilia, artifacts, pictures and documents that are currently in storage or on loan. The community uses the hall for many community classes and events as well as an educational center for the history of the internment camps and the veterans’ own stories.

 

Rainier Vista Boys and Girls Club

$800,000 for a new building to re-establish the Boys and Girls Club in the Rainier Valley and help our young people see alternatives to street crime, gangs, etc. Club programs and services promote and enhance the development of boys and girls by instilling a sense of competence, usefulness, belonging and influence.

 

CASA Latina

$1 million to buy and renovate a building on Jackson St & 7th. CASA Latina offers immigrants a wide range of programs to help them become contributing members of our community. Since its founding in 1994, this organization has focused in three areas: education, employment and leadership. They teach ESL classes as well as workshops on job safety, worker rights and consumer education. They also introduce immigrant workers to employers and some are placed in temporary or permanent jobs.

 

Japanese Cultural and Community Center of Washington

$1 million to help build a Japanese Cultural and Community Center, which has been a dream of the Japanese American community for decades. In 2003, the Nikkei Heritage Association of Washington formed as a not-for-profit corporation registered in the State of Washington, doing business as the Japanese Cultural and Community Center of Washington (JCCCW). The mission of the JCCCW is to share and promote Japanese and Japanese American culture and heritage. The proposed Community Center will be a community gathering place, a center of multi-cultural education, a center for historic preservation and heritage arts and a place of culture and language international exchange.

 

Seattle Children’s Playgarden

$332,000 to build a new Garden House that will include a kitchen, meeting room/classroom and restroom. They have already built a basketball court and plan on building a working garden, a sensory garden, a garden of exploration, and a garden of play. Children with disabilities get very little chance to play outside in parks because regular parks are not built to accommodate these children with their unique needs. The plans for this playgarden will allow these children to actually experience gardens and play on play equipment built just for them.

 

HomeSight and SEED

$250,000 to add a second floor to the existing facility. HomeSight and Southeast Effective Development (SEED) are two organizations that are housed in the same facility on Rainier Avenue in southeast Seattle. They have outgrown that facility and have determined that by adding a second floor, they will be able to bring all their programs to that facility. Both of these programs invest in the future of southeast Seattle by facilitating housing, social, economic, arts and cultural programs within the community.

 

City to Mountains Greenway Outdoor Recreation Package

$3.6 million to enhance picnic areas and recreational land, obtain a very small amount of new property, and sustain current properties. The project is unique because it includes a broad-based alliance of many groups – conservation groups; recreation groups; private corporations; and government agencies. This project is part of the Mountains to Sound Greenway, which stretches over 100 miles along Interstate 90 from the shores of Puget Sound in Seattle, over Snoqualmie Pass and into Central Washington. Much of the Greenway is public land and includes over 700,000 acres held by local, state and federal agencies in trust for the public good. The Greenway encompasses protected and working forests, farms, historic towns, lakes, campgrounds, rivers, trails and wildlife habitat just outside the Seattle metropolitan area.

Teens and young adults learn leadership skills, take on meaningful decision making roles; plan and carry out service projects; and are encouraged to be active and engaged contributors to our communities.

 

Hiawatha Artist Loft

$1 million for affordable housing and work units for low- to moderate-income artists. Building on the success of the Tashiro Kaplan Artist Lofts, Artspace and HomeSight are collaborating on 61 units of affordable combination living/work spaces artists, as well as five commercial storefronts which will be available for artist related businesses. Artspace is a national non-profit organization that creates, fosters and preserves affordable space for artists and arts organizations, and HomeSight is a Seattle-based affordable housing developer that calls the 37th district “home.”

 

Chief Seattle Club Day Center and Lofts

$350,000 towards renovations of the Monterey Hotel in Pioneer Square. Chief Seattle Club's mission is to provide a sacred space to nurture, affirm and renew the spirit of urban Native Peoples. The Chief Seattle Club Community Service Center and Lofts Project is converting the vacant historic building known as the Monterey Hotel. The basement and ground floor will serve as the new, dedicated Chief Seattle Club space. The two upper floors are being converted to eleven live/work loft apartments targeted to artists. Along with cultural activities, the Day Center provides breakfast and bag lunchs, case management services, van transporation for medical necessities and community events, and a place to shower, rest, receive mail and make phone calls.

 

Divine Alternatives for Dads Services

$10,000 for renovations. D.A.D.S. assists in developing a sense of responsibility through effective fathering. D.A.D.S. provides a one-on-one case advocacy program and other support programs for fathers in need of family services. This includes assistance with reunification with their children, referrals to drug and alcohol treatment programs, employment counseling and assistance with child support adjustments and with developing plans to pay off arrearages, assistance with housing, legal assistance, parenting classes, and family stability programs.
