San Juan Land Bank Fisherman Bay Spit
acquisition and development
$1.178 million grant to buy and develop nearly 1 mile of saltwater shoreline and tidelands and 29.4 upland acres on Lopez Island. The property, known as Fisherman Bay Spit, will give the public access to the beach for walking, fishing, kayak landing and picnicking, and will preserve a diversity of shoreline habitats, several recorded archaeological sites and a magnificent natural landscape. Development will include construction of a parking lot, trails, a restroom and signs. The spectacular sand spit at the entrance to Fisherman Bay is a prominent landmark within the renowned San Juan Islands. While the San Juan Islands have nearly 440 miles of saltwater shoreline, less than 5 percent is available for public use. San Juan County will contribute $2,186,127 in funding and donated labor and materials.

$444,329 grant to buy about 5 acres of land
adjacent to the Skagit River for a much needed public access site.
This land is at the eastern end of a mile long shoreline development
program called "Burlington Riverwalk." The project will buy land
within a levee setback area and add them to 5 acres owned by Dike
District #12. The future development of a day use, river access area
on the 10-acre site will provide recreation opportunities not
provided at the adjacent 132-acre Skagit River Park. The site has
historically been an informal river access point, particularly
during fishing season. The first phase of development creates
parking away from the shoreline, separating pedestrians and river
users from vehicles. A future phase adds an information kiosk, trail
connections, picnic tables, and restrooms. The project is a
partnership between the City of Burlington and Dike District #12.
Burlington will contribute $281, 369.
