THE HOME STRETCH
The Legislature is now in the home stretch of the 2008
session — we still have to hold conferences on bills that
passed both the House and the Senate to reconcile the
differences between them, including many budget items, but
we only have until midnight on Thursday, March 13 to get it
all done.

This week the Senate devoted its attention to what is
often the single most important issue we face during
even-year short sessions like this one — making sure our
budget stays balanced and that important projects and

FIGHTING FOR FERRIES
Many people in our community rely on the service of
Washington State Ferries as a part of their daily lives, so
it’s no surprise that ferries have been a big part of the
local news ever since the decision to retire the Steel
Electric boats was made back in November.

IMPROVING OAK HARBOR MARINA
Many people might be surprised to learn that a place with
such a strong nautical tradition as Whidbey Island doesn’t
have all that many places where visiting tourists can tie
their boat up for the day, or that a town with a name like
Oak Harbor is struggling to improve its public marina.

GOLD STAR MOTHERS
I’m sure that many of you have noticed plenty of cars
driving around with decals on their bumpers or trunks —
those yellow ribbons honoring members of our armed forces. Those ribbons remind me of a very emotional symbol from
the Second World War — something that has been long since
forgotten, but which I think we should revive.

MAKING ISLAND COUNTY “RURAL”
Anyone who’s spent time in Island County knows that it’s
far more rural than urban, but an obscure glitch in state
law that provides funding for rural economic development
defines Island County as urban due to its population density
– and shortchanges us in the process.
