Pictures and Video: Keiser takes aerial tour of Green River Valley flood zone 10/27/2009

Sen. Karen Keiser, D-Kent, went airborne October 27 with Rep. Tina Orwall and  King County Sheriff’s Office pilots to see the flood zone. In January, federal engineers discovered that water is seeping through an abutment in the right hillside of the Howard Hanson Dam. While there is no danger of the dam failing, water levels will be kept below the maximum pool level until the repairs have been made. If the region is hit with heavy rains, water might have to be released into the Green River. That increased flow could top levees. Keiser has been heavily involved in preparation discussions with state and local leaders.

Over two dozen state legislators, including Sen. Karen Keiser, met with the White House and Capitol Hill leaders to share views of how to build a strong state-federal partnership to provide quality, affordable health care for all Americans.

Working with the Progressive States Network and the White House Work Group of State Legislators for Health Reform, Keiser and the other legislators met with over thirty Congressional offices, including directly with Senators Tom Harkin, Mary Landrieu,  Mary Cantwell, Max Baucus, Chuck Grassley, Amy Klobuchar, Patty Murray, the top staff of Majority Leader Harry Reid and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, and top White House officials including David Axelrod and Nancy-Ann DeParle.

So close but……. 10/14/2009

Sen. Keiser just wrapped up her appointment at the White House. She and other state lawmakers from around the nation were scheduled to meet with President Obama to talk about  the impact health reform legislation will have on the states, but President Obama had to attend a very important meeting about the situation in Afghanistan. Keiser and the others met with David Axelrod, Senior Advisor to President Obama, for two hours in the West Wing. Keiser describes the meeting as very productive.

Keiser to meet with President Obama Wednesday 10/13/2009

Sen. Karen Keiser and a small group of state lawmakers from around the country are scheduled to meet with President Obama Wednesday to discuss health care reform.

Keiser is on her fourth trip to the nation’s capital to lobby Congress to pass a comprehensive reform plan that improves the current system and gives states the flexibility to expand on existing programs.

Alert: Keiser set to lead health reform discussion 10/1/2009

The Washington state Capitol is buzzing with activity today. Legislative committees are meeting to discuss a host of issues. Sen. Karen Keiser, chair of the Health & Long-Term Care Committee, is leading a work session today at 3:30 pm in anticipation that federal health reform will pass this year. The meeting will be held in Senate Hearing Room 4.

Cooperation urged to protect the Green River Valley 9/14/2009

Sen. Karen Keiser, D-Kent, issued the following statement today regarding efforts to protect the Green River Valley from catastrophic flooding.

“We’re in a race to prevent lives from being lost and the Valley’s economic core from being wiped out. A good defense is the best offense. Everyone living and working in vulnerable areas should develop a plan and purchase flood insurance.
