Troubled youth legislation approved by state Senate 4/16/2013

The Washington State Senate has passed House Bill 1336, legislation aimed at increasing the capacity for schools and school districts to recognize and respond to troubled youth.

"Youth suicide and youth violence in our schools impacts an entire community," said Sen. Christine Rolfes, D- Kitsap County, sponsor of the Senate companion bill. "It’s important that school professionals receive the training and resources they need to help prevent these tragedies."

Kitsap County projects included in Senate Capital Budget 4/9/2013

The Washington State Senate today proposed a $3.4 billion, 2013-2015 Capital Budget which focuses on creating jobs, improving our schools and protecting our region's quality of life.

One project that is tapped to receive funding is the first phase in the repurposing of the Frances Haddon Morgan Center in Bremerton. The Bremerton Housing Authority, Kitsap Mental Health, and the City of Bremerton have proposed to convert three residential cottages at the former state facility into 24 individual studio units for permanent supportive housing for Kitsap Mental Health Services clients with behavioral health needs. "I'm thrilled to see that this property might be put back to good use, helping the most vulnerable among us," said Sen. Christine Rolfes, D- Kitsap County.

Sen. Rolfes’ statement on Gov. Inslee’s budget proposal, education funding 3/28/2013

Sen. Christine Rolfes today issued the following statement after Gov. Jay Inslee announced his 2013-2015 budget proposal which would dedicate $1.2 billion to funding education and fulfilling the McCleary ruling by closing tax loopholes and extending existing taxes.

"The budget proposal today is a very solid first step in meeting the requirement of the state Supreme Court’s McCleary decision to fund our public schools and children.
